Joe Lovano búcsúztatója

Július 25-én este (a BJO próba után) a Debreceni Jazz Napok szervezőinek felkérésére megvacsoráztattam Joe Lovano-t. Sok mindenről beszélt velem, de különösen lelkesülten beszélt a Budapest Jazz Orchestra-ról. Megemlítette, hogy nagyon tetszik neki a harsonás Feri (Schreck) hangszíne, és a ritmusszekció. Azon belül is a dobos! És másnap a felújított debreceni nagyerdei Szabadtéri Színpadon különös duó varázslatnak lehettünk szemtanúi mintegy 3 perc erejéig: Joe Lovano tárogatón játszott, Mohay András pedig vele egyenértékűen dobolt! Aztán a koncert után odamentem Andrishoz és elmondtam neki előző esti beszélgetésünk rá vonatkozó részletét. Döbbenten nézett rám, és azt válaszolta: „Ne vicceljen már.” Andris ott fent az égben, remélem ma reggel is olvassa a JazzMa.hu-t és végre elhiszi! – A szerk.

On July 24th I flew to Budapest, Hungary to collaborate with The Budapest Jazz Orchestra under the direction of lead altoist Gabor Kollmann, we were to headline at the Debrecen Jazz Festival on the 26th. The day before, we had a fantastic rehearsal of my music, we could have played a concert that night. I was pleasantly surprised and really happy with the sound and spirit of the band. They played the heck out of my music, especially the rhythm section. On the 26th, we had a swinging, dymamic, expressive and explosive set. Everyone there was inspired. 

That night, I stayed in Debrecen before going on to Bordeaux the next morning. However, the band got in some cars and on a bus and were involved in a tragic accident on the highway. Andras Mohay’s, the BJO's drummer, life was taken. Others were injured as well. My heart goes out to Andras’ family and all of the wonderful musicians in The Budapest Jazz Orchestra. There's no rhyme or reason when things like this happen.

I look forward to collaborating with them again in the future to pay special tribute to Andras Mohay and his memory.
