The Steve Coleman interview

A Budapesti Tavaszi Fesztivál felkért, hogy készítsek interjút az április 5-én a Budapest Jazz Clubban két egymást követő koncertet adó világhírű amerikai szaxofonossal, Steve Coleman-nel. Külön köszönet az osztrák koncertügynökség, a Saudades munkatársának, Barbara Achatz-nak, aki rendkívül rövid idő alatt elintézte, hogy az alábbi e-mailes társalgás realizálódhatott. Március 15-én, szerdán délelőtt 10 óra 23 perckor átküldtem kérdéseimet, és Mr. Coleman 13.46-kor már válaszolt is a New York-i M-Base-ből… A 6 órás időeltolódás okán ez a Big Apple-ben reggeli 7 óra 46 percet jelentett. Ezek szerint Steve barátunk korai kelő! A BTF-fel kötött szerződés értelmében azonban ezt csak most, a 12. hét első napján tehetem közzé.

Am I right if I thought that would be your second visit to Hungary?

I have been to Hungary many times, so this is more than my second visit. I’ve been touring Europe since 1978!

Did you remember the first one?

No, I cannot remember the first visit to Hungry. After many years everything is just blurring together. However I do remember a visit to the house of Bela Bartok sometime in 2004 or 2005.

What kind of impressions did you get from the Hungarian audience?

No, special impressions, audience impressions for me are not based on nationality.

Who will be the members of the Steve Coleman’s Reflex Trio in Budapest?

Would you tell me some words about Anthony and Sean?

I thought you didn’t know the group members? Hahaha!

I have have known both Anthony and Sean for a long time, and we have been working together frequently since I met them, so obviously we have a musical affinity. I have been working with Anthony since 1995, and I’ve been working with Sean since 1996. Both are of course excellent mature musicians with multiple interests, as many creative people have. The name of this trio is Steve Coleman and Reflex (not Steve Coleman’s Reflex), and this is only the third time I have toured in Europe with a trio of my own group (I toured Europe a trio with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette in the past, in the late 1980s or early 1990s - but I was not the leader of this ensemble)

What kind of repertoire do you plan for the concert at Budapest Jazz Club?

I don’t know how to answer this. Original music with a base of spontaneous composition. I don’t call what I do Jazz.

Mr. Coleman if I counted well you made 29 records under your own name. When will you issue the next one?

My next recording is going to be released in May or June of this year (2017) and involves one of my groups called Steve Coleman’s Natal Eclipse. The instrumentation of this group is basically an octet with percussion added for some compositions.
